Kind of hot and cold… I find Valeria’s perspective much more interesting and compelling than James’ perspective. It’s interesting that you don’t seem to read much of a scene playing out in real time, moreso a retelling or even just a character’s inner monologue. It often feels as though the author speaks directly to the reader, telling them about the ways things are in Italy.
