this story is so interesting and so well told I’m obsessed. It’s classic Backman character building with a hint of mystery and crime but also humor?? Sooo up my alley

The way Backman hits his points home is SO good I can’t take it - he has such an incredibly satisfying and unique writing style I love it sm

I have no idea what to think. A strong part of me thinks that the detective has a way bigger part in this than we think but I truly have no clue. I have no many unanswered questions😭 but in the best possible way

ohhh this is gonna be such a riveting read I can already tell - I’m SO excited. Tell me why I feel like Mrs. Baker did it right off the bat?? The fact that she said it was Lenora’s wish to never leave the mansion but Lenora said in the typewriter excerpts that being trapped in the house would be a fate worse than death…that’s not adding up. Also Mrs. Baker just gives really creepy vibes

I’m having to get used to the more old-timey writing style but I so far love the characters and how Francie’s world is depicted

From what I know about the plot of this book it’s absolutely gonna destroy me…you start talking about old married couples and dogs and I’m done.

Also the fact that Bo’s perspective is written as if he’s talking to his wife with Alzheimer’s😭 not setting me up for success

Mmmm I’m struggling with this a bit. I’m enjoying it, but it feels a bit like semi connected short stories rather than a novel. It doesn’t feel like there’s a good flow between the chapters, everything is just a bit choppy and if someone asked me to describe the plot I’m not quite sure what I would tell them🙃

The story definitely started off a bit slow but I’ve been really enjoying it. It’s picking up a lot more now. I want to know about Franny’s past - what happened with her and Niall, her daughter, what led her to be in prison, what she’s running from

Franny is so damaged. We don’t know yet what happened in her past, but it’s something horrible that makes her run. The crew also has their own things that haunt them, their reason for choosing (or needing) to live at sea in such a dangerous environment. This book is so important. The way the author talks about species loss and climate change is horrifying but real - this could be our future

Oh Alva🥺 I’m so happy that her and Jules finally got together and created a life but it makes me so sad to think of the cards she was dealt. It breaks my heart to know how much she deserves to live to old age with jules and their children and also having a sinking feeling that she won’t get to….

the dynamic between Alva, Jules, and Sasha is so interesting. I’m really intrigued how that’s going to end up. Jules is crazy for running away from his life to live with them - but ultimately I understand that Alva is his life

Now THIS is what I’m talking about. So crazy how you can tell whether or not you’re going to be able to enjoy a book within the first couple of pages. I knew instantly that I was going to like this way more than the book I just DNF’d. The opening segment was so intriguing…I can’t wait to get in to this!!

Oh god…if this book was any longer than it is I would DNF it rn. Literally what is happening. The writing feels like someone trying to tell you a story but they just blabber on and won’t get to the point and you don’t really know what they’re actually saying. I’m bored, truthfully. Also going straight from a John Boyne novel to this should be illegal. I’m not having fun…praying this picks up and SOON

Freya is SICK. Like actually sick in the head disgusting pervert pedo murderer freak. And the way she’s so nonchalant about what she does?? Making the boys think they were the ones that assaulted her?? This was one of the hardest things to read. Finding out about Aaron was such a fuck yeah moment. Go him for reporting her - also Rebecca’s monologue on pg. 335 about the inheritance of evil was so well written
