Clarice Lispector, I love your writing

I’m so upset by how disappointed this book is leaving me. It feels very much like a first draft and doesn’t have any of the polish I was expecting—especially with a comp to Ninth House ☹️

Very hard to put this feeling into words because yes this book is campy… but it has a younger voice to it that really makes it difficult to believe that’s it’s classed as an adult novel. Idk

The dialogue is already making me cringe um….

I knew this book had a lot of triggers in it, but I really was not prepared for the horror that was chapter two.

Natsuki’s mom is cartoonishly evil :(

If I have to read the phrase “this pregnancy isn’t normal” or “arrector pili” one more time I’m going to scream

Yeah this is rapidly turning into a hate read. My rant review is incoming as soon as I can force myself to finish this book.

If I wasn’t reading this with my friends for book club, I’d honestly dnf. The writing is very shallow and the characters all seem wildly exaggerated. Even with the satire angle of trad wives, there is literally no believability behind any of Camille’s actions. I was hoping for something far more nuanced, but alas

This one hasn’t yet hooked me like I hoped it would… I still have high hopes things can turn around though
