Sadly the writing style didn’t work for me. DNF at 30%

This book offers a very particular kind of catharsis that, I think, only someone who’s both raised Catholic and queer can fully experience. If you still have a deep but complicated relationship with family/religion, you absolutely need to check this one out. Also, this book proves exactly why Yesteryear is lazy work: yes, specificity really does go a long way when you’re trying to convincingly write about religion.

Really struggling with this one. Would have DNF’ed if it wasn’t for the book club

Quick read, light and occasionally funny but the lack of character development gave the protagonist a cartoonish edge that really bothered me, making him sound frivolous, pretentious and tone-deaf.

Cozy space opera, fast-pacing and entertaining. I’m excited to check the rest of the series

Strong start with great atmosphere (despite all the irrelevant setup) but somewhere along the way things become dull, confusing and repetitive. I didn’t really care for any character or their relationships, and had to push through the last 100 pages because there was no need for this story to be told in 500 pages. A Victorian fever dream frozen one second before the punchline.

Well, this was sad af. I had a few issues with the pacing and some of the choices toward the end, but overall, this was had decent engaging plot, with good commentary on how the patriarchy can ruin both girls’ and boys’ lives alike. I appreciate the effort to create a character who is sympathetic yet still irredeemable, and the decision not to romanticize abuse or give in to the usual romantasy clichés. 3,5 stars
