1: graphic: Defined as "giving vivid detail", but the connotation for the word tends to lean negative. In the book, it describes the brutal murders that a man committed.
2: execution: Can be used to describe the carrying out of a plan, or a death sentence. In the book, it is used to describe the punishment the man faces.
3: magnanimous: Used to describe kindness, with a connotation of helping those who are below you

The author uses a somewhat causal/intimate style when writing. This is evident in how she recalls stories from her past, doing so in a way that makes it feel as though we are a close friend of hers.

The main goal of the author is to better understand the man on death row that she has been assigned to. One obstacle that she faces is understanding the gruesome nature of his crime. The author struggles to imagine how a person could do such an act.

Based on what I have read so far, I feel that the author is not unreliable. Although she writes from the Christian perspective, she has discussed how her beliefs have evolved throughout her life regarding social teaching. Because of this open-minded view, I feel that she is trustworthy.

I chose this book due to the fact that the topic of the death penalty is something that interests me. Although I think that I know my beliefs on the subject, I am excited to see whether my thoughts are challenged or reinforced after reading.

I have felt such unity when our community experiences a tragic event, as everyone comes together in solidarity

The repeated lyrics "what will be, will be" connects to the theme of the novel, as it highlights the importance of accepting the uncertainty of life. The lyrics teach us to follow our hearts in spite of our anxieties, for no matter what happens, we will be able to overcome it.

I would try my best to consider their thoughts and feelings, while also making sure that nothing happens that would severely weaken our relationship.

The priorities in my life are my family, friends, and faith

I can understand how short-stringers share many struggles that minority groups also face, given that they are treated as "less than" due to an uncontrollable factor. Because of this, I feel that the short-stringers should advocate for their rights, as having a shorter lifespan does not equate to being a danger/threat to society in any substantial way.

I would not look at my child's box. I feel that it should be their choice, not only to look, but also to tell me. I wouldn't want to take that choice away from them.

Anthony's shady political tactics highlight his selfish character. I would not want someone who is willing to put his/her opponent down in such a way in office.

Hank deals with his string by hiding it from everyone he knows. However, his mindset changes when his coworker/lover Anika finds out about his short string. Feeling a sense of relief from her knowing, Hank decides to seek help from the support group, the same support group that Ben and Maura attend.

As a religious person, I do believe in miracles. However, I feel that the majority of said miracles are not the ones that people most commonly imagine. I feel that "miracles" can happen within the simple things of life, whether we notice them or not.

The incident at the hospital could lead to further discussion on the place of "short stringers" in society. For Hank, his original guilt towards the man may push him to treat those with short strings with increased sympathy, as a way to make up for the indifference he witnessed. For the world, many may start to view "short stringers" as a danger to society, a group that must be controlled in their unpredictability.

If I had a long string, I would not "test it" to the extent that the couple did. However, I would choose to do some things that I previously thought to be too risky. For example, I might travel to a new place, or pick up a thrilling hobby.

The author is now introducing us to the minds of Maura and Amie. We see how Maura's behavior mimics that of Nina, as the boxes have completely taken over her existence. They are both unsure on how to move forward in their lives. For Amie, the boxes have not had the same effect. Rather, the mystery of the boxes has fed into her curiosity, allowing for her to stay somewhat composed.

Although both Ben and Nina have been dealt different cards regarding their string lengths, they both understand that their lives will never be the same. Ben believes that he can find hope in the situation, as he seeks comfort in his friend and a support group. Nina, however, struggles to find peace. She is left distraught after seeing her partner's short string.

I chose to read this book because of a recommendation from a family member. Additionally, I was intrigued by the book's setting. Taking place in 19th century Nebraska, I feel that it will be fun to learn more about this time and place.

If I were to receive such a box, I would choose not to open it. I feel that, if I did, I would live in constant fear and anxiety, always thinking of the time that I had left. I would much rather live in ignorance of my lifespan, as it would allow me to live as it was intended.
