Just about finished with the book. It went in so many directions that I was not expecting. I actually like that about it. I'm still trying to consider how I want to rate it now that I'm just about at the end of the book.

The family situations are really complicated.

Luca really enjoyed the cover title with the large letters. He ripped out the page with the Playlist. I'll need to tape it back in.

Complicated family history with the brothers. Interesting how the protagonist both fits in and doesn't fit into the family she obviously wishes was her own.

I am ready for the Mord-Sith section of this book to be over. It's been very dark and hard to get through.

I just started the book because it is the free serial read for the Barnes and Noble Nook app. Even though it's early in the book, I'm enjoying the main character, Olive. She's quirky and spunky for the time period. I look forward to getting to know more about her as the mystery progresses.

I am a fan of Esquivel, and I look forward to this novel. Thus far, it is a serious tone/theme novel. In terms of a spectrum of her work, I would categorize "Like Water for Chocolate" to the far left, "Malinche" in the middle, and "Pierced by the Sun" to the far right (categorizing imagery/light thematic matters versus serious/historical content). The tone is very different from "Like Water for Chocolate."

The heroine and hero have finally met. She does not know the truth about who the Dey is, and it is actually really difficult for me to read this book as a romance as an adult. I cannot help but see the bias about a culture, people, and time period that I know little of...and everything makes me angry that a woman is put in a position as a sex slave. I do not find the set-up romantic in the least.

SPOILER ALERT for anyone who is not reading...

We learn that the hero of the book, Derek (aka Kamir), is a twin brother of Jamil, the Dey of Barikah. Our heroine was just purchased by the Dey as the sex toy for his brother, who is going to replace him for a while as Jamil hunts down a younger brother who is trying to kill him. There is a lot of intrigue thus far but no action between the main protagonists.

There is a lot of background information about the supposed "culture" of the area. Of course, I am reading it all with a grain of salt, especially because of the very specific and critical reviews posted by other Goodreads' reviewers. As a child, I wouldn't have known to be critical about the history being posed. It does make me want to research the specific region with some good nonfiction titles.

I believe this is the first adult romance book that I ever read way back in 1998 when I was babysitting. For some reason, I had it on my mind to re-read it. When I heard of Lindsey's passing, I figured now was as good as time as any for a re-read, especially as it was over 20 years ago since my first time. So far, it is moving slower than I remember and is less scandalous than my teenage mind recalls.

This book is eerie. I love the feel and the questions regarding the ethics of how much we interfere when we see something suspicious. I am waiting to read this book more because my friend Shelmar might purchase it to read with me. I think she will love it despite the British accent on the audible version.

Wow -- this book is taking a lot of twists and turns that I did not expect. I feel like I should see the surprises coming, but I am too caught up in the story. Thus, I keep missing them. I hope my friend Shelmar purchases this book, so I have someone to discuss it with.

I read this book before, and it is still as charming as the first time. I want Charlotte to teach Alex a lesson for how to treat people. His attitude is pretentious although he is a wonderful father to Pippa.

I love seeing more depth to Edward's character. He was always a favorite supporting Anita Blake character.

Almost done with the Miriam section. I waver between sympathy and annoyance by her unwillingness to move on with her life. I want the women in this book to be stronger and more independent. I guess wishful thinking when you consider the time period.
