We Keep the Dead Close: A Murder at Harvard and a Half Century of Silence
Ostensibly a true crime account about a murder at Harvard in 1969. Also serves as an account of academia during those years, primarily the sexist nature.

Burning Down the Haus: Punk Rock, Revolution, and the Fall of the Berlin Wall
Gets me thinking about the current US situation and ways to resist. We are all dangerous if we choose to be.

Very good. Entertaining, yet horrific, portrait of North Korea.

Really enjoying this. Set in Antarctica 150 years or so in the future, post global warming and the subsequent upheavals. Compelling story and food for thought.

Don't know Bass really, but some his heroes are mine too. He has already written about Peter Matthiessen and Doug Peacock (the basis for Hayduke in Monkey Wrench Gang.

Tibetan Peach Pie: A True Account of an Imaginative Life
Haven't read any Robbins in a while, though he was.important to me at one time. Still, in his 80s, smart and funny. Didn't know until now that he's an NC native.

The Compass of Zen (Shambhala Dragon Editions)
Much less austere and more approachable than most of the Japanese Zen books I've read. I'm a new member of the Kwan Um school, in the lineage of master Seung Sahn. Trying to get more serious about my practice.

Eh. A little entertaining, but the author is not as funny as he thinks he is.

On a Gibson tear. Remarkable to read him over twenty years after this was published and see how prescient he was. In this case, regarding celebrity culture.

Arcadia
So beautifully written. A brilliant choice to have a young, prematurely born boy narrate. The language so perfectly mirrors the chaotic, yet in some ways serene, nature of Arcadia. Hard to put down.

The Earth Shall Weep: A History of Native America
Infuriating, but informative. It seems that, guess what!?! The introduction of a capitalistic way of life disrupted and ruined the native way of life.

Very good and informing. Places HHDL in context and covers many facets of his life. He is a singular human being, who just celebrated his 83rd birthday.

Pico Iyer is one of my favorite writers. The Dalai Lama's story is providing some sorely needed inspiration and hope.

What a book. Compelling like the best mystery stories. I haven't read anything in a while that makes me not want to put it down, like this does.

Yeah. A lot of detail here but it's fascinating. I had never thought much about how the ground I live and walk on every day was formed, but now I do.
