Brutal and beautiful, this is some of, if not, the finest prose I have ever read. It reads like a fairytale grounded fully in the insensitive passage of time. Everyone should read this book. Be warned, it is very brutal at parts though.

Absolutely riveting! Did you know Celtic languages, of which modern Irish and Scottish Gaelic are members, were once spoke as far away as modern day Turkey and Spain? Gone now thanks to the Romans.

Another fun factoid, the Gothic language, the only member of the no longer extant Eastern Germanic branch of Germanic languages was spoken in modern Crimes up to the 1700s. Germanic, Slavic, Turkic all in the same place.

Man, I love this book. Easily my favorite non-fiction read ever. I was asked the other day, if I could have dinner with anyone who would it be? I said Laura Spinney, the author of this book, just to pick her mind more about this incredible subject.
