Parts made me uneasy. Meticulous detailing of foot binding, miscarriage/stillbirths, a tapeworm extraction, smallpox lesions, etc. seemed unnecessary. LS describing women as “useless branch(es) of the family tree” if they couldn’t get pregnant not once but THRICE within the story was strange. Easy 100 pages too long. 3.5/5.
