Going from MM romances to this haha yeah eclectic tastes alright. I wonder if they made this book part of the curriculum of the African American lit classes I took in college now

let’s preface by saying I don’t want to spend an audible credit on this. I didn’t really click with this author’s book in the Vino&Veritas series so I feel like using a credit for a book I won’t want to listen to again would be waste. But that being said, going with only the written version without audiobook help my focus might very well end in a DNF. I don’t want to skip it entirely so we’ll see

This is just bad

Thinking about DNFing this. A lot of telling and not showing. A lot of giggling for some reason like that’s the best way to show they’re attracted and awkward? Idk. And Tag just met the guy and is already feeling guilty about not telling him his true identity… I mean ok a new anonymous life doesn’t work if you just tell everyone on the first date (second date)

They’re both so stupid. Low self esteem and Miscommunication are just annoying at this point.

As expected they’re both at the club and they sense each other so they’re going to fuck. Alpha is going to lose his V-card as they put it and Omega doesn’t have any more reservations to being fucking through his heat. I mean sure… *eyeroll*

The worldbuilding could work well enough but the writing style is just not good. I mean it’s not my taste, maybe it works for other people but to me it’s just bad

The actions of the kids are just nonsensical

Also you have the killer who just stabbed your bf and you punch him and then just let him continue following you to kill you? How about you contain him and call the police or just idk kill him and be done with him?

There is nowhere near enough lube and prepping going on in this book

Where the heck is the secret society plot? Where are all the dead bodies they hide and the creepy things they do in the dark?
I’m waiting for them to go after Alek or something like that because he ends up pissing off the wrong person. If it’s not that, I’m going to be disappointed bc right now the secret society is just a line in a book that’s just a toxic romance with a side of car race and photography

I’ve spent all this time going in a circle of “this is bad but also kinda good?” to “no this is bad actually” to “wait do i enjoy this?” to finally landing at 50% and I think that my true answer is that it is bad actually. As in it’s not good, the writing isn’t great, the plot isn’t great, the romance feels like it’s been written by a teenager.

No but the fact that we just glaze over the fact that almost everything from part 1 was just pointless.
Huck’s football scholarship was a bust but his grandparents took him in and he went to college in California.
The motocross scholarship that Taylor wanted so bad and Huck won for him, got cancelled because Taylor violated his probation.
wtf was the point of everything that happened before

Uhhh wtf is she on about… I get that she’s his best friend and all but come on. At least Taylor does realize that “opening the curtain” was unforgivable

Hurt people hurt people and all that sure. But the main question is how do we root for them to be together idk. Huck’s anxiety and closet and him trying to regulate with his meds… all of that was bad enough without throwing a jealous violent step brother in the mix. I like MCs who make each other better, not worse…
Now the question is are they going to fix it in part 2? Part 3?? And will we feel it… idk

Idk I felt for Taylor and his shitty defense mechanisms of starting fights and trying to get hurt to cover the fact that his dad is beating him to a pulp. I understand why he would have so much internalized homophobia. He’s toxic towards everybody and mainly himself. I feel for this broken boy sure, but the outing is probably the unforgivable part here. Because he was jealous of Huck being with his bf, dude…

And after all this angst, we’re jumping to part 2, right after the suicide attempt and have a fast forward to 4 years in the future. Fucking hell. I enjoy the writing style but there were many time jumps in this already and now it’s 4 years jfc. Do I dare hope the toxic dumpster fire will get fixed?

There was nowhere near enough sweet moments on the Delaware track. Like come on! I feel robbed on that point. Jfc because where are the moments that make us root for them to be together? Right now it’s a shitshow.

This is such a rough ride. They are so toxic for each other.
Bullying was bad enough, the hot and cold struggle with sexuality and teenagers being terrible at communication of their traumas and feelings sure ok… but then it turns to Taylor breaking Huck’s arm, outing him in front of the whole school and parents. Huck trying to kill himself because of it. Fucking hell. Can we come back from that? Idk

I love this Delaware track and I hope these broken boys get to be happy in their little secret bubble

Book 1 didn’t deter me, maybe this one will win me over

Sooo i’m a bit on the fence right now because i was definitely that young person in deep financial shit (still, but just less young ha) and there’s a bit of that uncomfortable feeling of a vulnerable person being preyed on. Like I have that same feeling when strangers offer to pay for nudes because im in the poverty finance subreddit.
Here the redeeming thing is that he would help just to help if he was allowed
