One ironic part was when Frank was scared to fight the bullies. This is ironic because Frank is bigger than most kids. When Stanley, who is smaller than the bullies, talked to Frank after the fight he said, "What the heck Frank... You're bigger than both of those guys! We could've beat them if you helped me." (16). That's when Stanley realized Frank was too scared even though he could have easily won the fight.

One very sad part was when Isabella's grandfather jumped into the ocean to save the rest of the boat. This would help them have a better chance of getting into America because he would serve as a decoy for the Coast Guard. He jumped because when he was younger he denied Jewish people the right to get into Cuba and he still felt guilty. His last words to her were, "Don't stop rowing for shore, goodbye Isabella"(277).

One shocking part was when Ivan died. Everyone except Isabel's mom was in the water joking around until all of a sudden a fin appeared and then everything changed. "Isabel watched as his face grew pale...Isabel wanted to scream too but she was frozen. There was nothing they could do. Nothing anyone could do. Ivan was dead" (208). The shark only took some small bites out of his leg but it was too late to save him.

One important part is when Isabel jumped in the water to save Senor Castillo even though it was dangerous for her. When Isabel realized this was exactly how her grandmother died two years ago she didn't think twice. "I remembered how my grandmother disappeared under the waves just like that two years ago and without another thought I dove in after Senor Castillo (120).

Isabel is worried that they were going to get caught and be sent back to Cuba and thrown in jail while everyone is very confident that they will make it to America. "What do you think the states will be like?"(84). Everyone replied while Isabel sat there wondering if they were even going to make it there. No one else even thought about it.

Josef feels that since his dad has gotten back from the concentration camp he hasn't been the same. His dad was running past sailors looking for cameras and told his family that they were coming back for him. This proves that in the concentration camp they did very horrific crimes to the people there because for a normal person to get so paranoid and worried in just 6 months of being there is scary.

Minho was the only one who trusted Thomas's idea to escape the maze. At the gathering everybody was telling Thomas that he was crazy and they would all get killed but Minho fought back with Thomas against everyone else. "That's the dumbest theory I've ever heard. He just got freaking torn apart three nights ago. You think that's part of the act?" (310). This proves that Minho had faith in Thomas when no one else did.

The changing messes with the way the characters think. For example Gally stood right in front of Thomas and punched him square in the face before tripping and breaking a lamp. "They'll kill you...The Grievers will kill you all--one every night til' it's over!" Gally screamed (p.256). Gally never used to act this way therefore this proves that the changing messes with the characters minds.

Thomas was feeling pressure because he felt responsible for getting Chuck home to his family. For example Thomas felt the burning in his heart which happens when you feel very emotional. Thomas said to Chuck "I bet your mom is sitting in your room right now, holding your pillow... And yeah, I bet she's crying". This proves that Thomas felt bad for Chuck and is going to work hard to get Chuck back home to his family.

One conflict was when Thomas ran all the way out of the glade into the maze. Thomas did this because he kept hearing the girls voice in his head and he got so scared and annoyed by it he ran deep into the maze and had to find his way back. Luckily for Thomas his stamina, speed and memorization of the maze was so good he was able to find his way back into the glade just minutes before the doors closed for the night.

Thomas was nervous when he thought Ben's banishment would be his fault. For example he hid behind a taller kid so Ben couldn't see him. "please" he said and glanced from boy to boy Thomas quickly stepped behind another boy to avoid confrontation with Ben. This proves Thomas didn't want Ben to blame his banishment all on Thomas.

Thomas was scared when he learned about the grievers. For example he said "what hurts a lot" with fear in his voice. "No one dies if they make it back in time to get the serum it's all or nothing dead or not dead just hurts a lot". In conclusion this proves Thomas worries for his future and his fate.

One part that was very sad was when he was feeling self-conscious about his jacket. For example when Gary was out at recces he thought all the students were laughing at him because of his jacket. The teachers were no help they looked at me and talked about how foolish I looked. This proves Gary felt self-conscious.
