One shocking part was when Gemma, who was already feeling weird because Ty kept staring at her at the airport, was about to be stolen without realizing it. Ty bought her coffee, and without her knowing, he put something in it that made her feel dizzy. Trying to hide her fear, she says, "Thanks for the coffee"(89). This shows Gemma didn't realize Ty's bad plan until it was too late, emphasizing the need to be careful.

One important part was when Gemma met Ty at the airport. Gemma finds Ty interesting but feels scared. Even at the airport, Gemma felt like something strange was happening. She senses someone watching them, which worries her. "His eyes meet mine. And suddenly I know. We're being watched" (42). This shows Gemma's fear growing as she senses someone watching them, suggesting that danger might be approaching.

One shocking part was when Lillian killed all the CITS except Esme. As the CITS headed towards the dark woods at night, Esme suddenly heard a loud gunshot from behind her. Esme was shocked to see the CITS lying on the ground with Lillian holding the gun. "Kayla, Olly, and Jake are dead, Lillian is gone...and I'm holding the gun" (377). This demonstrates the immense fear and sudden realization that Esme experienced.

"My pulse whooshes loudly in my ears" (286). This demonstrates how frightened and fearful Esme felt when Lillian sneaked into their cabin.

One important part was when Esme told Olly her secret that she has kept for so many years. As they headed towards the woods, Esme revealed that she had been responsible for the fire in the forest when she was a camper. "The weight of the secret is heavy, but rather than feeling lighter now that I've told Olly, I want to crawl under a rock" (229). This shows how ashamed she felt when she saw how disappointed he was.

One important part was when Esme and Kayla returned to the forest at night again. In the darkness, they noticed a tall figure in the distance moving quickly towards them. Frightened, they hid behind a tree, hoping that they wouldn't be seen. "I curl smaller inside myself and say another silent prayer" (171). This demonstrates how terrified and overwhelmed Esme felt as she flattened herself against the tree.

One important part was when Esme and Kayla took their small group of campers into the woods at night. As they followed the trail, Esme suddenly felt a shiver down her spine when she heard leaves rustling behind her. "Someone is in the woods. They were really far away, so I can't be sure, but I think it was a boy" (67). This demonstrates how frightened Esme felt knowing that someone had been following them.

One favorite part was when Esme, her best friend, Kayla, along with the other CITs gathered around the campfire late at night to tell stories. Going around in a circle, each CIT shared their greatest fear. "My biggest fear is that someone will find out what I did ten years ago" (18). This demonstrates how horrified Esme would be if anyone discovered the secret of what her and Kayla did at the lake as campers.

One important part was when the regulators caught Lena and Alex together. While Alex manages to escape, Lena gets captured by the regulators. "When I open my eyes the world seems to have broken apart into a thousand pieces. All I see are tiny shards of light, fuzzy and swirling like they've been shaken up by a kaleidoscope" (400). This demonstrates how disoriented Lena became after being hit in the head with a club.

One shocking part was when Lena and Alex visited the Crypts. The Crypts is an asylum filled with all captured invalids and sympathizers, supposedly where Lena's mother lives now. "I had sworn that day that I would never, ever return to the Crypts for any reason" (338). This demonstrates how traumatized Lena was before the conversation she had with Alex about her mother supposedly living in the Crypts.

One shocking part was when Lena and Alex kissed each other. Lena is taken to a tiny wooden shed by Alex where he wraps his shirt around her wound and then they kiss. "This is the only thing I've ever wanted. Everything else, every single second of every single day that has come before this very moment, this kiss, has meant nothing" (232). This demonstrates how much Lena admires Alex and how much she wants him.

"Alex's voice gets whipped away by the wind, sounding fainter and fainter, and when I finally work up the courage to look over my shoulder I see him" (171). This demonstrates how eager Lena was to get away from him.

One shocking part was when Lena talked back to her Aunt Carol for the first time. This immediately made Lena feel awful because she is usually always obedient and respectful. "I know about curfew," I snap. "I've only been hearing about it for my whole life." (76), Lena blurted out. This demonstrates how aggravated Lena became as a result of how nervous she was after lying to her Aunt Carol.

One trait to describe Lena is shy. Lena doesn't know what to say in most situations. She was extremely worried about her evaluation while her friend, Hana, seemed nonchalant about it. "I take a deep breath, then duck down to pull the plastic bin from under my bed so that my aunt won't see I'm shaking." (11), Lena thought. This shows how overwhelmed Lena was when reviewing her speech with her aunt.

One part that was very sad was when he threw his jacket into an alleyway. One example is when he threw his jacket on a fence and when people started making fun of him when he wore his jacket. "Although they didn't say it out loud "Man that was ugly." I could hear the buzz buzz of gossip. This shows that since the jacket is ugly.

I couldn't believe that Jeremiah also liked belly.
