I see the appeal. But it wasn't for me. The name-dropping of African-American legends was fun but not enough to keep me going for the whole book.

Rachel is reading Invisible Boy: A Memoir of Self-Discovery
A touching tale of bi-racial adoption, wrapped in evangelical ignorance. This is a blueprint for why white women looking for a pet project should not adopt Black children. He wakes up at age 21. Twenty years a slave.
It took courage to tell this story.

It's a slow start but the slow descent towards death is depressing. Well written. I can see the author's poetry style in some of the prose.
We are fortunate that the author had evidence to share with readers, a rare occurence that brings the story to life in ways I have not seen on the page.
Good book. Depressing topic.

The 1970s. Before I was born. Interesting.

This book was suggested to me because it was set in Africa, with the juxtaposition of Black Americans and native Africans. The first half delivered. The second half, set in the USA, was less interesting because I'm already familiar with the Black immigration experience.
