If, like me, you have a very limited knowledge of Sparta, then this is a really enjoyable read.

If someone says they admire the Spartans as then they clearly don’t know enough about them.

To summarise:

The Gods are self absorbed
Men are mostly honourable
Women are “bitches”

The beefy introduction started slow but got better as it went on.
Book 1 - sublime, gets you hooked immediately the poetry is lyrical and vivid
Book 2 - a tale of two cities, it continues strong but then the gathering of the armies and proceeding to name every protagonist no matter how insignificant dragged. It lasted 12 pages and a lot of it doesn’t sink in
Boom 3 - introduction of Helen and Paris and its great
