Finally made it to Swann in Love!

I love the child’s perspective and descriptions of Combray in the second section. I’m a little sad to see things switching over to Swan’s affair.

I have so many thoughts and feelings about the ending of this section and Proust’s beautiful prose. I’ll come back to it later!

This just feels like kind of trite self help so far? I feel a bit disappointed but I’m going to keep listening to it (I have the audiobook) and give it a chance.

I can see why this is an influential book. Some of the misinformation peddled by beauty companies is shocking to learn about. However, the book can feel outdated or over-generalized at times.

I recently learned that Wolf has turned into a bit of an online conspiracy theorist lol. I don’t think this inhibits my ability to derive meaning from her work. It just means I need to read with a critical perspective.

All I have to say about this so far is that this is how I feel entering the workforce after college. Probably because I have an overactive imagination like the narrator and can’t wait to go home and do something creative

This book is so good and spooky so far. Really reminds me of the film Ugetsu, and of course, Kwaiidan, for which this was the source material. The author, Lafcadio Hearn, lived such an interesting life that I spent quite a lot of time reading about him.

Made it to Combray II! I’ve been reading it slowly so far. I’m enjoying the way that Proust talks about memory and time. I was moved by the idea of time travelling in your sleep. Also, the idea of objects taking on the spirits of dead loved ones, reviving your memories of them.

Other notes:
-Pages upon pages of Freudian mommy issues
-I don’t understand the references to 19th century France class system lol
