Hunter Lockwood is finished with It Seemed Like a Good Idea (Darling Springs, #1)
Overall, this was a very cute book, spicier than I had predicted (not that I'm complaining). Like watching a rom com that included light bondage.

In places, it was a little on-the-nose, the way that many things are, these days.

You're definitely not allowed to do that in a Jane Austen book

Well they're certainly not allowed to do this in Jane Austen's books

About as different from Jane Austen as you could imagine, and yet strangely similar in some ways.

Magical. Dreamlike. Multiple narrators with different perspectives. Stream-of-consciousness. Deep and complex symbolism. Madness.

Hell of a book. Not a romance, but not totally tragic. All along, you know how it'll end, if you know Jane Eyre, but it reframes Bertha and the final part of the book is strangely freeing.

“Meditate on love. For when you meditate on love any ill will will be given up.

Meditate on compassion. For when you meditate on compassion any cruelty will be given up.

Meditate on rejoicing. For when you meditate on rejoicing any discontent will be given up.”

“But that intimacy of mutual embarrassment, in which each feels that the other is feeling something, having once existed, its effect is not to be done away with”

This book is going to physically hurt me, isn’t it

Still reading one sutta a day as I keep up my meditation habit.

Buddhism sometimes is de-spiritualized in America (for historical and social reasons too complex to cover in a Goodreads review) but it really is interesting how frequently the Buddha is like “don’t just trust me bro, examine the evidence”
