One-third past the book (it's longer than 2ha, so it's about 5-6k pages on my phone depending on font size), & even though I used to avoid 民国文 like the plague cause I find that they cut too close to reality, esp. with the bleak undertones of ww1, but 事实证明了没有我接受不了的剧情,只有接受不了的文笔。so far the vibes of this book is reminiscent of 沉舟 & 将进酒 even if the settings are different. Plot + characters + writing A++.

The main characters remind me of the two protagonists in Higashino's Journey Under the Midnight Sun, which was a book that left a deep impression on me... I really enjoy the book thus far; hope it doesn't disappoint in the end.

“My name is Kvothe, pronounced nearly the same as 'quothe'."

I wish the author had found some way to insert that sentence somewhere in the beginning of the book so I didn't have to spend >50 pages wondering how to pronounce the protagonist's name. ಠ_ಠ

Author opines that concepts of natural/unnatural are based on theology rather than biology. "If we use our limbs and organs for the purpose envisioned by God, then it is a natural activity. To use them differently than God intends is unnatural. But evolution has no purpose. Organs have not evolved with a purpose, and the way they are used is in constant flux." >> Descent with modification through natural selection.

His take on the agricultural revolution is a little strange, but the subsequent chapters that touched on evolution are interesting, e.g. "According to the science of biology, people were not created’. They have evolved. And they certainly did not evolve to be ‘equal’." because "Evolution is based on difference, not on equality."

I wanted to write something about how I felt and what I thought reading this book, but I can't seem to put anything to words. There's just so much ideas in this book and nothing I say can possibly do it any justice. This is a book you'll have to step away quite frequently to think and to reconcile your thoughts. But it's wonderful. I only wish I had read it earlier.

I'm terrible at guessing the ending when it comes to Agatha Christie (my imagination is either too far-fetched/ illogical) but I noticed that usually the most likely characters are indeed guilty in the last few books (did Hercule Poirot say something about that somewhere?) So HOPEFULLY I can get it right this time...

Interesting; anyone who has read both HG and BR can see the obvious similarity in their settings but the direction the stories take is actually quite different. HG is more of politics & revolution (esp in Book3), whereas BR focuses on the human survival instinct when threatened, and narrates the story from a more "personal" angle because the participants are all from the same class.

I'd love more from Kazuo's POV.

Ning Xin is finished with The Complete Grimm's Fairy Tales
Ok so I've gone a bit insane and started listening to audiobooks in addition to reading ebooks and paperbacks and fan fiction and random livejournal original fiction.

I've read Grimm's Fairy Tales before and thought it would be better to start my audiobook journey with something I'm more familiar with, so here I am, all over again.

An absolute page turner; I'm hooked. As was with The Woman in White, I have loads of theories in my head now. (For The Woman in White, some of them turned out to be quite far-fetched.)

Once past the first few introductory chapters, this book presents quite a mystery, and I'm starting to restrain myself from going straight to wiki and reading the entire plot synopsis.

I have a feeling that I'll come to either love or hate the narrator; he's around my age, so if I come to identify myself with him, this book will be infinitely more enjoyable. Conversely, if I don't, I'll likely look upon him with disdain because of how differently we turned out as teenagers.

To be honest, having just begun reading the book, already the introduction sounds like — to use the vernacular — crap.
