This has already gripped me by the throat and slammed me into a wall compared to the last book I read (King of Wrath).

I saw a play version of this and animal farm in high school, and all I remember is that big brother do be watching 👀 and there was a scene with a woman and a bed. Drama. I’m ready. Take me.

Super excited to update my 3 friends on here (no idea how to discern the difference between a follower and a friend on this app) that I have officially given myself a romance buying ban. King of Wrath broke me. I’ve been in a book slump since Crescent city 3, and I can’t do poorly written smut and no plot anymore to “try to get out of it”.

This book is happening to me. Idk if that makes sense but this plot is GIVING PLOT. Do I care about the slight romantic aspect? No because it’s f’d BUT I feel like this is the first anything I’ve read in ages where it feels like a book is GIVING any kind of f’d up romantic relationship that propels the plot. THIS IS A FANFICTION??? Y R MY STANDARDS ONLY BEING MET WITH FANFICTION!!!!!!!!!!!!

Upsettingly, I am beginning to get distracted by the writing :( I know it's an urban fantasy so I was prepared for some colloquialisms and for the choice of writing style Maas would most likely employ. But some of the dialogue is so millennial that I'm finding myself highlighting everything that's distracting. 48 highlights, 45% of the way through the book... I am entertained but I'm also frequently distracted.

I am so entertained.

Yes, it's a little bit silly that a civilian with no investigative training is heading up a murder investigation but I'm so entertained.

By this point in the first book we had met the protagonist and the anti-hero, set up history on both sides, had 3 major plot points that propelled the story forward at a neck break pace - that replenished my ADHD brain with serotonin after my experience with Fourth Wing - why am I 30% in (120 pages) and nothing has happened. ALSO how can every scene seem so rushed but nothing has happened? I’m scared.
