Our hero is telling his tale in his own way. Do you believe him? King Alcinous certainly does: "Alcinous replied, "Odysseus, / the earth sustains all different kinds of people. / Many are cheats and thieves, who fashion lies / out of thin air. But when I look at you, / I know you are not in that category. / Your story has both grace and wisdom in it. / You sounded like askillful poet..." Really?

It’s the Odyssey. Thinking about how story of a polotropos (Greek for many of many tunings approximately) and it’s also really a story about Telemachus, also. Our [anti?] hero is washed up on the island of the Phaeacians and in the next book will be at the knees of the the queen telling his story (I think?). Need to research Nausicaa and the Valley of the Wind connections.

What a great book!! Eminently readable and superbly interesting

Finished Keep the Aspidistra Flying just now, and it’s quite a worthwhile novel indeed! One can observe a whole lot of what would become 1984 in it The want to write, the need to, but: "His mind was sticky with boredom. He couldn't cope with rhymes and adjectives. You can't, with only twopence halfpenny in your pocket." Winston Smith mirrors Gordon Comstock in other ways too but I have only 22 characters left!
