Grant began to travel quite a bit for the military always wishing to be with Sarah, little Fred and US Grant jr. While away from them Grant takes up drinking and often shows signs of depression. Grant tries frequently to get rich quick while stationed in California to afford to bring his family but continuously fails. This setups how drinking and depression become a gray cloud over Grant for his entire career.

Just finished up the section on the Mexican American War. First off that was probably the most in depth description of that war I have ever read. Which is saying something because it was quite high level. But it seems to be like the book suggested that war was almost a training ground for all the big name generals in the civil war.
