Wild reading this right after Caliban and the Witch, partly describing the same thing.

The cuts from fictional narrative to nonfictional statistics in this book remind me of Prison Song by SOAD

Funny to think how an evolutionary psychologist somewhere will attribute a human universality to a social condition that’s only a few hundred years old and took (take) the power of massive states to enforce.

Before primitive accumulation and the establishing of capitalism, common women were just as much workers as were men. They labored in common lands and had trades prior to their strict relegation to reproduction. “For once women’s activities were defined as non-work, women’s labor began to appear as a natural resource, available to all, no less than the air we breathe or the water we drink.”

Didn’t expect to run into an ick this quickly into the book like I get it, it’s Octavia… but call this male character The President of the United States the way he be [CONTENT WARNING] a little girl he just met. Think I’m gonna take a break from this one for a minute.

I’m realizing these books can abruptly shift between sanguine and brutal. Funny to read to your kitten about two dragons fighting to the death and you look up from the book after something you feel was a bit much and she says with her sweet voice “what happened next after he claws her eyes out???”

Funny the writing style was making me think of Caitlin Doughty and then Amber actually mentions her specifically as an influence.

“And thus the life insurance company refused to pay out, although [character] had passed through the event horizon [of a black hole], and should now be dead. But it is also impossible to prove that [he] is dead.”

Even in the future insurance companies are exactly the same.

Idk how these books keep getting more insane

Some Incel’s brain floating out into space for all eternity was not on my Bingo card for this series. But it’s actually a little Shakespearean in a way.

Ooo this one began with a creation myth

All the western empires love to test out policing, counter intelligence, surveillance, torture, and other operations of state terror on their black and brown colonial subjects before bringing them back to Europe. In this case the British Empire used Kenya as its testing ground for what it would unleash during The Troubles. Really ties in with my Ngugi readings rn.

Ngugi makes such Human characters! Complete with all their flaws.

But nothing I can relate to. I’m a cat: perfect in every way.

Every Ngugi novel I’ve read so far starts out slow. So much is going on that I don’t understand. So many names and characters who I’ve yet to actually meet. But by the end, it all comes together into such a grand climax and even the earliest chapters begin to make sense! Just a matter of getting over that initial hump. A commitment to whats to come.
