The morning of August 9th 1945 was wild. At 4am the Japanese leaders learn the Soviet Union has just declared war on them and launched a surprise invasion of Manchuria, at 10:30am the leaders meet in a panic to discuss how to deal with this new threat, and literally halfway through that meeting they get news that Nagasaki has just been hit by a second atomic bomb

I don't think this war is going super well for Japan

Continually losing my mind over the insanity of Japan’s military strategy in 1945

"By mustering millions of erstwhile civilians into the area swept by bombs, artillery, and small-arms fire, Japan's military masters willfully consigned hundreds of thousands of their countrymen to death. They would compel Americans to treat all Japanese as combatants or fail to do so at their peril. It was a recipe for extinction."

My continuous experience with this book so far:

*finishes a page*

'Wow, I don't see how the war situation can get much worse for Japan right now'

*flips to next page*

'Oh, that's how'

The Americans invading Quebec City in 1775, fully expecting the Canadiens to be sympathetic and rise alongside them, only for the Canadiens to overwhelmingly not care and let the British evict the Americans in a raging blizzard battle, will never not be funny to me. This is the true moment a Canadian identity was forged

I do wish the US firebombing campaign over Japan in WW2 was more known about. The atomic bombings tend to get most of the attention in pop culture, but the firebombings were not only more horrific and terrifying- they also killed far more people. The March 10 air raid on Tokyo alone possibly killed more than Hiroshima and Nagasaki combined.

Finally reached the chapter regarding the firebombing of Tokyo. This trilogy has made me teary-eyed a few times already, but this part was pretty tough to read

Wow, the Allies are really putting a lot of effort to fortify Singapore. This better not accidentally lead to the greatest military disaster in British history or anything

Reading about Japan’s slow descent into fascism in the 1930s is reminding me of how I felt watching the Prequels and seeing Anakin become Darth Vader

Machiavelli and I have almost the exact same Myers-Briggs personality type according to online (only difference is that he's extroverted)

I also have the exact same personality type as George R.R. Martin

I also consider myself a Slytherin

I'm not sure if that says anything about me but I promise I'm not evil guys 💀

Hilarious that Burke is coping and seething about all the chaos the French Revolution has been causing, in 1790, when it’s barely a year old. BROTHER, IF YOU THINK THIS IS BAD, JUST YOU WAIT.

'To know that she had the power of revealing what would so exceedingly astonish Jane, and must, at the same time, so highly gratify whatever of her own vanity she had not yet been able to reason away, was such a temptation to openness as nothing could have conquered but the state of indecision in which she remained as to the extent of what she could communicate....'

The angel Gabriel showing up like a WWE wrestler to grapple Muhammad for being illiterate (Sahih Muslim 160a) was definitely not on my Islamic theology bingo

My Muslim friend when I asked him about this: 'yeah so he's basically just trying to get Muhammad to lock in'
