First book in over 6 months. Finally got the itch back and this one is starting off interesting!

This feels a little all over the place so far. I know the author is trying to give backstory so I just need to hold tight.

I’ve been reading a chapter or two at the start of my day. This book really gets me into a positive mindset and sets me up for a successful day!

“Pain and pleasure go together; they are inseparable. They can be celebrated. They are ordinary. Birth is painful and delightful. Death is painful and delightful. Everything that ends is also the beginning of something else. Pain is not punishment; pleasure is not a reward.”

Admittedly, I had no idea what this book was about & just put it on my Libby holds due to FOMO. So far I am invested and ready to see where Kat story takes us!

I am struggling. This is so repetitive. No chapters. Dialogue has no quotations and is absolutely bland. It feels very emotionless. We get a glimpse of the past but it’s very surface level. The kid asks a question. The dad says “I don’t know” and the kids says “okay” then the dad says “okay”. Wtf?!

I really want to DNF but I will continue…

All I want to read about is Alina’s story. I am not very interested in Alice’s story. The only likeable characters in the modern timeline are Babcia and Wade.

Takeaways so far:
James H. Hammond gives me the ick. Yes, I am using Gen Z language referring to a Civil War era legislator. 😂
South Carolina is delulu about the implications of their secession. Also find it odd that women were more into it than the men?

So far loving this history book!

Loving this so far! Takes place in Michigan and it’s making me homesick.

So this is already starting out pretty dark. I will say, Titus is a great MMC. Smart, principled, and empathetic. All the makings of a great hero.

I’m a bit bored of this book to be honest.

Audiobook. This is like Demon Copperhead and The September House had a baby. My interest is piqued.

Buddy read with Sam. This is a much needed light and fluffy book to cleanse my palette after Demon Copperhead.

The writing takes some getting used to, as well as the unfamiliar local dialects. However, the story is compelling and I’m interested to see more of Damon’s story.

This feels like the ramblings of a senile person & the narrator is supposed to be 31. I’m pushing through but it’s pretty annoying how the narrator won’t stay on topic!

Audiobook from Libby. I’m digging this! It’s technically a “horror” but I find myself chuckling more than I thought I would.
