I hate him. I feel a disgust for a character I have never felt. I feel an anger, and also, I see in many ways how this is the story of Columbus upon American soil. How this is the stories of all the native populations decimated by men. I feel disgusted, angry. I hate this man.

He still is a colonizer. He still did erase from these children their culture and language. But he also saved them. He also offered them a kindness that they would otherwise have not had. He still is not kind to them. He still stole them. He still killed their land before taking them.

My hatred of this man is making this book so hard to read! And the subtle address of colonialism, and the conqeuences of old, armchair anthropology is beautiful. This story thus far has so much to it. Also, the way the footnotes shifts the perspective, and kind of builds the character of the narrator? Genius.

So we're supposed to like this guy? But also, go off closeted homo tendencies. But also why does this guy think he's so great. He literally pushes everyone away to chase some greatness that he feels he is owed for being better than everybody (through his own view). Also noticed that the footnotes are meant to make the narrative more cohesive and reliable. The narrative is still very unreliable.

Wow. Just wow. I agree with the author's conclusion to this part. yes.

Progress update: It's such an interesting book so far. I picked this up after I finished "A Little Life," as I greatly enjoyed the way Yanagihara wrote, and developed the story. This story seems to take a little more world building, and has a lot of fantasy elements. It is told as a memoir. Currently hate the main character, but as someone who loves a flawed protagonist, I'm looking forward to where this goes.
