already falling in deeeep with this. walked past the “new fiction” shelf i always pay no mind to at my library but saw this cover in the corner of my eye and it actually made me turn back around to look at the book like some intervention. grateful i stepped out of that routined haze; i hate running, have fear of big books, don’t read books like this in general, but GOD i feel an excited curiosity with this one

last 5 pages should’ve spanned 25 min given the authors clear skill in elaborating extensively on the MC’s inner world … 🙂‍↔️

reading modern romance is a good chance for introspection on ego, and luckily this book is both different from other white woman dominated modern romance yet still has classic elements straightforwardness, linear inner monologues, & introduction of plot points by straight up just. stating them. feels good to venture out but also difficult to not want “more” (what rly do i mean by “more” tho…?)

on a real note though this is an IMPORTANT book for all year round especially now!! In america!!! In a growing age that is now fresh in adulthood in the modern day and grappling to release but also harbor childhood continuously!! fire 😛

kagami could cut out half of the fluff 5-page breaks between guren’s internal doom spiraling and it would make this book a bit better. love like the whole team and their upbringing n whatnot but dudeeee i do NOT need to see gender stereotypes and purposeless banter and weird pedo imagery EVERY 20 PAGES ffs

so far, bitter and full of loss, lots of separation from a more colonial, “new”, and nostalgia-chasing Maria, home/family dynamic, from her home life and mother and self-identity. i really enjoy how kincaid puts perspectives/lenses into stark contrast or comparison with colorful descriptives and physical sensations

i really admire the writing skills & lived-through tone it takes to produce a character like annie. not me saying the author has had a life of annie’s and it’s autobiographical in a way, but annie’s idiosyncrasies that make her, her, are so naturally executed throughout this book. i can understand & “foresee”annie’s character without predicting her & being bored 🙏

This book reads like prose, with the fresh figurative language tied in with a kind of staunch and unwavering characterization. i’m super excited to see where this goes in terms of womanhood, alliance with other girls/girlhood itself, and annie’s perceived value through the eyes of her mother.

kagami is a weirdo (known) but for the sake of shinya and guren i will push through ... begrudgingly

hate reading this then having to continue reality that is portrayed in the book as normal, it's ironic and uncomfortable

aside from that, jiyoung is such a cool person, I love her character and hyesu's and eunsil's too.

this is a reread, but reading it now in the scope of my political fiction class with personal anecdotes always being shared, this story is so much more harrowing than the first time I read it. Every sentence is so directly disruptive of how most books are written, and how most descriptions of family life/womanhood is. the kind of read that leaves you a little silent and small inside, as a woman.

beautiful writing style, it flows so well despite it being a bit more fragmented than other things i’ve read.

carnal greed and obsession always holds my interest, so i’m loving this so far. making me feel awestruck and disgusted on just about each page

only 22 pages in, but the moth imagery on pg 21 is gorgeous! for the continuous writing style, i find this still easy to understand and keep up with. Beautiful scared characterization, i like how common already Larry and Eilish feel to me… their tones and fears feel raw and cinematic. so excited to continue

good for it being a poli sci class assigned reading that is insightful, provoking, and fairly historically accurate, but GOD is the author shit at writing. i can tell he was a journalist prior to
