Also I love that amidst all of this psychological, cosmic horror the part the character chooses to register as horrific is the overwhelming sensation that a dolphin looked at her knowingly.

Imagine screaming in terror as a dolphin winks at you, while the material/real world around you is subsumed by something that regurgitates everything as a hybridized organism of senses/beings/place/time.

Men writing Women on a bit of a too obvious full display here, not the most egregious example but Gotta love the “small mousy, not like other girls, bad family life, total focus on science/career, not a single thing about the character suggests a drive for relationship but somehow their primary conflict is one of a failed relationship” archetype.
