I’m really enjoying this story ✨The topic itself is super interesting and the writing just demonstrates how much research must have been put into this book in regards to both typical Oxford society and the meaning of languages. Although one part of the story seemed a bit too sudden and gives the vibes of an action happening more for the sake of the plot, it’s still too early to judge.

I can already see me adding this to my comfort books shelf

BROTHER EWWW WHATS THAT. THIS IS TOO MUCH. The next few pages have got me in a CLUTCH.

So much violence against this boi. I can’t even begin to describe how much it angers me that him and Kojima attempt to rationalise the bullying they experience by seeing it as them simply „allowing“ it to happen/ having autonomy over it. Even though I find it an intrueging insight into their mental state, it still messes with me. My mind is just constantly screaming „ PLEASE JUST REACH OUT FOR HELP! GOD DAMN IT“

I’m loving Hobie with every page more and more. Theo‘s despair regarding the painting and just generally the way his traumas have severely affected his life is so saddening. Hobie being the kind of adult that Theo can seem to trust no matter what is such a relieve in this story filled with unfortunate events 🥲

Theo turned into a menace to society, that’s all I have to say (and he’s giving stalker vibes but might just be trauma idk )

Writing style is a lot simpler than I expected, but it puts the focus on the storyline. Nothing very notable yet, but it’s only the first chapter so I’ll refrain from judging :p

Annddddd time skip. Now the painting is (finally) becoming relevant. I really did enjoy the writing about the characters emotional turmoils, but it is weird when a book only truly starts after almost 400 pages 😭

I like the easy reading style and there is quite a lot of intriguing world building happening here (intertwining realistic history and fantasy) which also speaks in the books favour, but I can’t shake off the feeling that, plainly put, Kuangs political commentary, is slightly too on the nose.

Wallahi things are getting out of hand 🥲🤚🏻 *spoilers* his dad falls back into alcoholism and fricking dies, my boi runs away while literally being on drugs after robbing his dead dads girlfriend….
I can’t stop reading though. I think I’m in a toxic relationship with this book.

Nevermind the edgy teenager trope is going wayyy too far😭 My boi is just constantly drunk and his friend Boris seems too comfortable with violence for my taste. Plus, the stereotypes that Tartt applies in this book really are a hit or Miss. Sometimes they give complex characters a good framing, and sometimes they are just cringe inducing.

I like the versatility of the protagonist right now. It’s clear that he’s a teenager through his (sometimes cringe inducing) commentary, but here it feels to me like a frame through which his complexity of a character is expressed, which I really like. I do have to admit that him being one of those „edgy“ teenagers isn’t my thing, but makes sense considering his messed up background.

Very invested in the story right now, The Author made me want to root for the protagonist so much that I genuinely feel his disappointment once his abusive father had the balls to return to his life after his moms death. I also appreciate that Donna didn’t just create a caricature of a bad father, but actually makes him seem like a character who just has way too many flaws/ simply shouldn’t have been a dad.
