Just from reading the introduction, I know some of this is supposed to be set in the actual time period Leroux is writing about. But I'm not sure exactly to what extent this is supposed to be historical fiction. Like, are the managers he's mentioning as well as the the actual characters supposed to be real? Are most of these events based on fact? I could literally resolve this with a Google search, so I'll do that.

St John is such an asshole dude I'm glad she left that house altogether. It's telling of how men in power used religion as a way to justify their possessive and cruel behavior. That still happens today, but it is quite common in an era where Christianity is seen as the norm in western culture.

Jane is so interesting. I've said it before but it's true. She loves Mr. Rochester but she refuses to let him love her too much. She wants to be married and treated as an equal by him but does not want to be given special privileges and keep her same status as his servant. She finally gets ENGAGED to him, proving his love for her, but she's still calculating how long until he gets tired of her. She's so cool.

- Jane's perspective as the narrator is really important here because of how she illuminates Mr. Rochester while diminishing Miss Ingram. Like literally the whole analysis she has of them could be influenced by her hopes and fears
- Why the fuck were they using 20 million props just to play charades?
- Why were they all excited to go to a palm reader but then immediately get scared when she reads their palms...

- Jane surrounds herself with peers that are older than her, like Helen Burns, Mary Ann Wilson, and Miss Temple. They are very intellectually and emotionally intelligent women, which shows Jane's own intelligence or curiosity.
- foils I've noticed: Helen and Jane, Miss Temple and the Mr. Brocklehurst
- the irony of the springtime and the typhus is not lost on me either...
