Serge does such an incredible job of conveying the absolutely grim and machine like workings of the ussr when it comes to the Stalinist purges. No thread is left untouched - even when the threads being grasped are but the extension of a long line of lies employed by many of different men working to save their own asses. Especially liked the recent look into the Russians manipulation of the Spaniards in the civil war
