Not sure if I like this but it is another compelling book I'm only reading because of bookclub. The book was written well before the pandemic but there are a number of things in the first few chapters that are giving me some serious pandemic vibes which is both wild and upsetting.

The mentions that contextualise this book into a very specific time and place, that time being the early '10s, and that place being New York City, are growing and it honestly feels kind of cursed everytime something new pops up.

I kind of love Pepper even if he's a hothead. Also, all these late '00s/early '10s references are KILLING me.

I have absolutely no idea what is happening in this book but the writing is so compelling that I just keep turning the page to see what will happen next.

This book is a lot slower than the first one, I think that's why I don't remember it as well. I'm not actually certain that I finished the whole book. There's so much time devoted to the travel and I keep waiting to get to the arrival but I think that will be at the end of the book, so now I'm just trying to hurry and finish so I can start the next one.

I absolutely adore Jane Roland and would be delighted to read more about her. Also it is very funny the way Laurence reflects on his attitude towards his fuck buddy, rather than his paramour.

After learning all about the history of medical forensics and the history of coroners, this chapter has mostly so far dealt with racism and lynching in the south. It is taking me forever to read. I have a high tolerance for the subject matter but there's only so much I can tolerate before it gets depressing.

I wasn't expecting the third chapter of this book to be an overview of the history of coroners but it was a super fascinating read!

I like the discussion of logistics of feeding a dragon at sea and the character development of Temeraire.

Chp1. Scene setting. I like the way Laurence is portrayed, the way he thinks of himself. Also the slightly old-fashioned and formal tone. Love Temeraire of course. What a beast.

I've only gotten through the Foreword and the Author's Note and already I can feel my blood pressure going through the roof. This is going to be a difficult read. It was interesting to learn that John Grisham does work with the Innocence Project though.
