I think it’s a noble thing for Jo to cut her hair for Father. I admire her confidence in her body even though she’s not seen the way Meg is. I think her freedom inspires her sisters! Also so happy about her publication! Her character inspires me to write more.

I’m so excited to watch Meg and Mr.Brooke’s romance unfold. Little interactions are the best.

I will not trick myself into thinking romantic obsession is cute. It’s delusional. Gatsby, like any human, created something in his mind an idol of sorts of Daisy. Love is one thing, obsession is another and I wonder how this will end…

We still don’t know what he does for work …

I don’t hate it, but I don’t love it. There’s a lot to keep up with, and new, shady, characters keep popping up. I’m not trusting homie with the collar molers thing, I’m not particularly enjoying the characters either. They all seem miserable and dissatisfied. Distrust is the word. There are more characters to distrust than trust & Nick seems most honest and reliable.

How do we go from a snapshot into the “perfect life” of Tom and Daisy to this wild party scene with Tom and Myrtle at the center. And everyone sits around like they’re in the right??

And then Tom’s audacity to claim ownership of Daisy in the midst of his adultery? He’s bad news.

Very excited about another mention of Gatsby. Fitzgerald does a great job of building anticipation around his character.

Took a few pages to get into it but once Nick arrives at Daisy’s house it gets slightly interesting. I’m going to flip back and figure out why Tom brings up the book & try to reimagine the mannerisms of each character. What made Tom and Daisy get married? How does Daisy know Miss Baker? Why is Gatsby so important?

In Edmund’s experience with the White Witch, he indulges the flesh while easily slipping into the lure of her deception. His sister Lucy shook herself up from Tumnus’ attempt to trick her, which then led him into confession. Both siblings fall for the allure, but Lucy shows a natural ability to shake herself off and self direct back to her task (which was getting back home). Edmund reluctantly was dismissed.

I want to discuss the professor. His wisdom shines in his ability to gaze at truth through the lens of logistics. “Either your sister is telling lies, or she is mad, or she is telling the truth” (52) is a compelling quote aimed to challenge the readers perspective on truth. The professors willingness to defend Lucy and challenge her oldest two siblings paints him as a likable character who champions for truth.

I love that we start out with Lucy’s perspective. Her kindness, compassion, gentleness and fragility present her as soft (which is not a negative word! It’s beautiful), while simultaneously her character stands firm on her lived experience. Unlike her brother, Edmund, who’s overtaken by pride and the desire to present himself as mature by those around him, forsaking his sisters heart.

This book speaks to my heart in more ways than Louisa May Alcott intended. Or perhaps she did. It strikes me in every possible way. The complexities and diversity of girlhood, the deceitfulness of wealth, the reminder to give even in your lack and all the ways God meets us through our mothers, sisters, friends and life’s circumstances.
