The first chapter really disturbed me. I have read a ton of thrillers but generally the mystery feels fun somehow rather than upsetting. Hope I feel better about it soon

I took a strong dislike to Martha in the beginning, but she is growing on me. You would have to he pretty strong and no nonsense to survive in that time as a competent professional woman.

There are some strong little girl characters who are incredibly charming, and Pink so far isn't one of them at all. These little girl feminists who fight the patriarchy from grade school are just.... freaking annoying. They feel less like real people and more like virtue signaling from the author. Characters like Scout in to Kill a Mockingbird, or Arya from ASOIAF feel like real people, where as Pink feels forced

Ben keeps asking me as I am reading "how many murders now?" and now finally we got one!

Plot is captivating and stakes are high!
Violet is too snarky for my tastes and too willing to push away help of any kind. I really didn't like that she kept sparing her assassins. isn't moral in my eyes, just stupid.
Xaden Riorson... keep thinking "Ned.... Ned RYERSON!" haha. I don't quite the power dynamic or his attitude.
Dain is the worst! Predict he will betray Violet in some way, and become her enemy.

Violet begging to spare the lives of her attempted assassins doesn't make sense to me. Is it supposed to make her more moral/likeable?

Jack seems like a cartoon villain, so outrageously evil and angry it becomes a bit comical
