والمثقف إذن ليس الشخص الذي يحفظ الكثير من البيانات والمعلومات، ولكنه الشخص القادر على استخدام البيانات والمعلومات في إنتاج معرفة. والمعرفة هي استخدام البيانات في إنتاج معلومات واستخدامها في تحقيق منفعة محددة وواضحة.
