Loving this book after reading “Woman Who Run With The Wolves”.

Loving this book so far! It offers a window into my mother and grandmother’s generations from a psychological, spiritual, and story telling perspective.

It is white centric, and has thus far inspired me to look for other authors who write about similar topics, such as women’s journeys through life and story, from a more intersectional perspective.

This book makes my inner teenager happy

Cousins cannot be trusted in classic literature.

Mr. Rochester is my arch nemesis

I hate Mr. Rochester. Every time he opens his mouth I blanch.

I absolutely adore both Arther and Lucy so far. Linus is growing on me.

The author is definitely a sensationalist who has some interesting takes on Shakespeare’s works and ever present influence on media. There are a few excerpts that give me the “ick”.

The foreshadowing in chapter 10 hits different though.

The book opens with a captivating description of Patroclus’ childhood. It does not subtract from the plot, yet adds necessary context for his dynamic relationship with Achilles. By Chapter 9, the author foreshadows the tragedy that consumes this myth in somewhat obvious, yet simultaneously clever ways.

The narration at the beginning is great.

Also, I wish both main characters were more than observers in the events leading up to the climax.

The climax of this book is not nearly as compelling as it’s set up. S.T. Gibson wants her reader to anticipate danger for her characters, but this anticipation is dulled due to her use of multiple narrators. The story begged for a more dimensional climax that didn’t depend on one character being left out of the loop of a carefully laid out plan that the reader was (mostly) privy to.

I really enjoyed the set up of this book. From the start, S.T. Gibson creates compelling characters and describes an intriguing autumnal New England landscape. The cut throat atmosphere of academia enhances the budding conflict between characters. However, following the exposition, S.T. Gibson spends more time telling the reader how her character’s flaws impact the narrative than showing us.

I despise De Lafontaine.

I am in love with this modern day retelling of Carmilla.
