Honestly I'm so sick of the One Special Girl trope where men are soldiers and fighters and protectors and women are healers and supporters except for the One Special Girl who "isn't like other girls" (derogatory) but "oh wow I'm so pretty when someone does my hair"

So far, I'm not a fan. I don't really like this idea of "we were all put onto this earth intentionally to learn a lesson we otherwise wouldn't have" - and maybe my soul just isn't evolved enough - but I don't like how it romanticises abuse and war, among other things.
I also don't like this "woe is me, I'm too good of a person" attitude. But I'm hoping the book will manage to change my mind on that.

I have such mixed feelings about this book. I just read a scene so confusing and out of place I genuinely thought I had accidentally skipped ahead while flipping pages. But, at the same time, I am genuinely interested in what happens next.

I thought that I would get used to the somewhat creepy way Clarence Starling is written in this book, but I actually don't think I'll ever get over how uncomfortable it makes me.
