Janet is starting Ode to the Half-Broken
"This is a story about coming to terms with your past, with who you’ve become and who you still want to be: a tale of resilence and hope, an ode to those struggling to become whole in a world half-broken."

This is the book's description but also it's the author giving preachy speeches about climate change and how horrible are the people and government of America.

P.203 "[Ambitious] men are so peculiar,..." ... "They never love what they have as much as what they want."
I think this is the best line of the whole book! Hahaha

I'm enjoying the story, (it's a mystery), but at the same time it's a bit of a slow go because we must revisit the 2 main characters FEELINGS at LEAST once each chapter if not more often.
This is my pet peeve with much of Christian fiction.
If I ruminated on my feelings as often as these characters there would be little time for anything else. 😄

I've always enjoyed the Rodgers and Hammerstein movie musical, just found out it was made from a book so naturally I had to read it. Cleveland Public Library comes through again with an original copy from 1934!

Don't grow concerned friends, this work, even in its abridged form is going to take a long time to muddle through. Philosophy, theology, history, all nonfiction work, St. Augustine's words are too important to NOT read.
Like scripture, I have to stop and ponder what I'm reading often.

Wish me luck!! ♡

Janet is starting Anxious People
I'm reading this book for a library discussion. I've really enjoyed several of this author's other books and was eager to start this one, but this book is kickin my butt. The Anxious People are giving me anxiety. The story keeps jumping around to different events and times.
I'm not sure I'm going to be able to finish this book and not sure I want to try.

Making progress. This is my long read. I choose a thick book and read a chapter between other books. This way I can savor the story for a longer period of time and I'm never without something to read.

Favorite part so far; "Is it just possible," he (Doremus Jessup) sighed, "that the most vigorous and boldest idealists have been the worst enemies of human progress instead of its greatest creators? Possible that plain men with the humble trait of minding their own business will rank higher in the heavenly hierarchy than all the plumed souls who have shoved their way in among the masses and insisted on saving them?"

I'm thinking of starting another book club; heavy on mysteries but not exclusively so. We would meet at Panera on Tiedeman.

Janet is on page 304 of Paradise Lost In Plain and Simple English
So I'm reading this paperback translation; it's laden with spelling and grammatical errors. I overlook these because the plain English is making the read easier. However, I start page 304 and I read, "Until one day as I roamed in the fields lady gaga song donI happened To see a handsome tree in the distance".
I really don't think Milton knew or cared about lady gaga.

I thought this was going to be a scifi/fantasy read. Well, lots of fantasy. Did not realize there was so much graphic sex in this book. Big, hot Scotsman. I get it. She doesn't seem distressed by the fact she is cheating on her husband. I've been doing a LOT of skimming.
Debating if I want to continue with the series, or even this book.
