If there’s one thing I love, it’s a Mitch Albom book

AHHHH!!!! They took women’s teeth and organs and performed lobotomies to cure their “hysteria” or abnormalities. Just women!! Because I guess b****** be crazy 🫩🥸

The bladder chapter - it’s not normal to per every time you sneeze, laugh, or cough after childbirth. It’s not our “cross to bear” because we choose to have a child. If only female urology was taken a little more seriously earlier on, women wouldn’t feel so ashamed and think that this is the normal and something we have to live with.

Just finished the muscle chapter - ugh wow. For so long (and even can be seen today) women were told to not lift weights in fear of being “bulky” and that exercise can harm or limit a women’s ability to bear children or be a good house wife 🫩🥸🙄 women need to be small and not take up too much space bc we are frail and fragile. GIVE ME A BREAK!! I could go on but I’m running out of characters

Late to the party and late to updating! I read this on my unpaid 30 minute breaks at work so moving slowly but surely!

Okay I need to go to bed but Henrietta lacks’s daughter Elsie was at crownsville and was treated so horribly in the name of “science and research” despite her inability to consent because she was nonverbal and deaf. The Lacks family had been incredibly mistreated and misused in the name of science and it breaks my heart.

I’m bad at updating at the moment! This book is so incredibly eye opening and sad and I’m learning so much history that has been either lost or forgotten or untold or told and swept to the side. Really getting a lot out of this and not just how mental illness was viewed, but specifically how mental illness and prejudice in the black community of Maryland and Crownsville were viewed and treated.
