I don’t think I’m the target audience here. Ha! This feels like something you read to prove you’re intelligent and cultured. It’s long and kind of slow and very heavy. So far, I’ve covered a child marriage, suicide, drowning, discussion of scrotal surgery, leprosy, disfigurement via fire, and infant near-fatal choking, and I’m not even half way done. Neat.

Honestly, this feels like the sort of book you read to feel more cultured and intelligent. It’s long and heavy. I don’t think I’m the target audience here, but I kind of feel committed at this point. I’ve survived a drowning, a suicide, leprosy, cancer, and talk about a gigantic scrotum. Why not continue?! Ha!

For all the positive reviews, this book is DRAGGING. I’m just now only starting to care, and I’m halfway through. Hoping the second half picks up…

I picked this up at the recommendation of a friend, following conversations about how they struggle to equate Christianity & the messages of Jesus with the behavior & political stances of many who claim to champion the faith. While there are pieces of this that ring true for me, parts make me ache, too. I feel like it denies the fact that Jesus still lives, that relationship with God authors faith. We’ll see.

Super cute! Innocent & whimsical. A sunshiny backdrop as an audiobook while meal prepping. Characters remind me of those from the movie “Onward.” It has notes of Boxcar Children, cottage scenes from Sleeping Beauty, & fun magical moments with potions & creatures & plants like early Harry Potter anecdotes. Pacing is slow enough that I can do other things while listening but quick enough to stay interesting.
