This was published in November 2020, meaning Hill spent years prior to the great disaster of 2020 working on this. That said, as anyone from the Bay Area who has honestly contemplated life after the Big One, I feel like Hill's vision of the future 8 years after a disaster is a timeline simultaneously extremely accelerated yet still slow in its reconstruction.

*slamming hand on table* FAKE DATING PLOT I've always wondered why people who see themselves in contemporary romance fiction have been living like they don't need to seek out au fan-fiction for a complicated space opera for years and now I understand why, oh my gaaawwwwd, LESBIANS DID YOU KNOW WE COULD JUST EXIST IN LITERATURE WITHOUT TRAGEDY AND OYSTER METAPHORS

I've been so jealous of the women I know who can just read and click with romance novels. It turned out I just needed a book for me, a 30 year old lesbian with historically one romantic partner and mostly women friends.

I was starting to understand the main thematic conflict of this series as the disjoint between the books and the 1939 film (what becomes of Oz when you take it to the outside world of itself) but Jinjur's violence disrupted that understanding for me, interested to see where this goes

This book rocks so much what a delight. Holds up 90% and maybe 95% if you decide that this is set firmly in 1967 Berkeley.

I'm still trying to formulate if this book is subtextually homophobic or contextually just really hates the pink prep girlies in a early 2000s way

What's fascinating is that there was a time when culturally we were told to hate women who wore pink so much and to associate pink and hyper femininity with a mean girl bully archetype and we thought this would be forever and never age our texts ever

I feel like I'm in that Tiktok video that's like "Showing your friends that one kids movie only you and your sister know" where the girl's like "You don't know the Sewer King?!?!?!"

Do you remember how mad you were when you found out the Star Wars universe had the worst reproductive care despite being set in the middle of space empires? Did you ever ask yourself "I wish I could find a really boring book that ignites no emotion except that exact level of rage at Padme's delivery room set up"

"We argue in the kitchen about whether to have children" the novel. Jesus Christ not a single character is normal about anything.

You know when someone pretends their work is not Weird Horny because they have not come to terms with how horny they really are but you, who have cut your teeth reading terrible self published smut on the internet, can not NOT see the Weird Horniness when you read it? In a collected anthology of absolute sexually repressed freakiness it poses the question: Is it the writers who are the freaks or is it the editor?

Absolutely deranged! I love getting into the heads of people before me. I love learning more about the history of the Women's Liberation movement. I love learning genre history. Each story is like watching an old B-movie about a since resolved or reframed cultural fear (bearing a disabled child in a world without disability rights or services, strict gender roles, 'overpopulation' etc. etc.). Little frames of history

You know how War and Peace is daunting till you read it and you're like "Oh this was super straight forward except for the very end where he went off about log hauling and the nature of history"? Same thing here brother.
