Caroline is starting Full Dark, No Stars
There are four short stories in this. I started with A Good Marriage, which is the last story in the book. It is inspired by BTK’s double life. Knowing what I know about BTK, I can totally see the connections, especially with the husband being a cub scout leader. I definitely got spooked a couple times, especially (SPOILER) when he came home in the middle of the night knowing she had discovered his secret. 3/5

“I’m beginning to think my problem was loneliness. It describes not only a way of life but also a state of being, a social experience insistently internalized and corporeal, felt to be both essential and permanent.” (pg. 249)

“She seemed to believe that writing could solve anything… she gave you exercises to write letters home, letters that would never get sent. Some days she asked you to write angry rants; others, to imagine things from different perspectives. Dr. Holly felt these assignments would help you identify buried feelings and understand their origins, that they'd help you take control over your story.” (pg. 116)

“If adolescence is a passageway, a twilight zone or liminal space, it's also the time when, like thick blobs of gummy dough, we get poured into shape and rise. It's plastic time, a time of self-discovery and growth, and in some cases tremendous creativity. Teenagehood is that stage when you get to become who you are, or who you can be.” (pg. 99)

“She wants one, she needs one: a clear and focused identity, a hard shell to rove around in. But nothing quite feels like it fits.
Maybe the problem is not the fit, she considers, but her expectation that something should. Maybe the solution is it doesn't have to; she just needs to act like it does.” (pg. 10)

“That's one lesson learned from being a seasoned sleuth: everyone is hiding something.” (pg. 11)

I can’t annotate this book as I am borrowing it from Eva, so enjoy the quotes I like.

“Adolescence: We all go through it, some of us again and again. It's a transitional space, a waiting room, this long, shapeless stretch between youth and adulthood, naivete and knowledge… Adolescence is the hallway. The between, the almost, the not-there-yet.”
