Girlllllll this is getting intense. I feel like I can’t stop reading I need to know how this ends. Does Jespyr survive? What the fuck is Elm going to do with Hauth back? Is Elspeth actually going to be free? I just want everyone to live 😭

Damn, so they really are all the same person. That’s brilliant. Like genuinely I’m so shocked but at the same time I totally see it. I love that now that we know Essun is Syenite that sarcasm is really coming out. She’s repressing the person she turned into when she became Essun and is becoming more of her real self. Or I guess her fulcrum self (who knows who her real self is at this point)

Alright damn, I did not see it coming at Damaya and Syenite were the same person. And now, I feel like maybe Essun is also the same person. That each different POV is just the same person in different stages of their life. I don’t think Jija is alabaster so maybe syenite gets sent out of the fulcrum for exploring. Idk, but I’m so confusing and intrigued.

Also holy shit, is every chapter going to be this devastating from now on? Because what am I reading? It’s so horrible, and sad, and uncomfortable, but at the same time why can’t I stop now? I need to know how this ends/gets better and how all of the characters get their happy endings (if they don’t get happy endings I’m suing for emotional distress)

I’m 5 pages later and holy shit I hate Schaffa. God the end of this chapter is so uncomfortable and awful. The way he’s breaking her hand and the way he’s gaslighting her into believing he can, and should do it is making me a little sick. “Never say no to me” has me wanting to literally throw a punch through this page.

I keep going back and forth on whether I like Schaffa or not, and I feel like that’s intentional. Just because he saved Damaya does not make him a good person. Also, how is it that this 1 city has survived every earthquake? That seems way too suspicious. Orogenes are so persecuted and ostracized, but I bet they’re saving that city every time because someone is making them. There’s corruption somewhere.

Holy shit what an intro. Then the beginning has thrown me off with the writing style, but I’m finally starting to get it. There’s a whole bunch of extremely different characters that I think is going to be super interesting to follow their journeys. I feel like they’re building to where they will all meet, or at least their journey will affect someone else’s. I also have so many questions. Like, so many.

So basically Fin is the avatar lol, which I’m not mad about. It makes a lot of sense, and I got the feeling he didn’t even know how powerful he is. Also, what happens if he considers the whole country his home? Would he be able to use magic anywhere? And I’m kind of liking the mage Lee and Fin feud. I definitely feel like they’re going to addy least come to an understanding by the end, if not become friends

I was totally not expecting a Kraken POV chapter, much less his inner monologue but it was a nice palate cleanser between chapters

I didn’t expect others to find about this magic quote so fast. I didn’t see that coming. But now I’m curious what else is in store since the secret is pretty much already out.

Interesting first 2 chapters. So far we have the cook, the housekeeper, the king, and the spy and breakfast hasn’t even been served yet.

Not only is this the first memoir I’ve ever bought not for school, but I had no clue how it was going to be. I love Drew’s videos and her personality, but people online have a history of trying to branch off as writers or singers, and not being very good at it. I’m pleasantly surprised by her book so far. I feel as though I can hear her reading it, her own voice comes through so strongly lol

I have so many theories. Asher seems like too obvious a choice but maybe that’s the point? My mind keeps coming back to Lily’s dad who conveniently shows up right before she’s found dead and they didn’t have a good relationship. Was it an accident? A fit of rage followed by a fall down the stairs? Was it maya or dirk? He was the last one to see her alive and had flirted with her. I have no clue.

I called it!! I called that the nightmare is the Shepard king. Also, if Ravyn’s punishment is just that he’s not able to use cards, that’s a pretty easy punishment when compared to his brother. Maybe it’s because he got infected when he was a little older?

Still curious to see where this is going, but I have one note. Bes, girl. Stop falling all the time💀 Honestly that this point I think she’s fallen in every chapter. Either that or cried. On one hand I get it. On the other, girl get it together.

New prediction: the nightmare is actually the Shepard king that got locked in a card. The way he is talking about the spirit of the wood as if he knew her and what she required can’t be a coincidence. Also, maybe she’ll be able to cause the twin alders card to appear

Yep, definitely thought that Raven was also infected. Was not anticipated him being able to null the magic of the cards though. Or at least, I assume so. And it must be when he wants and not an automatic thing because he’s picked up other cards. I wonder if his degeneration is his humor? Or his sense of self? Maybe that’s why he’s so serious.
