Never pray to the Gods who answer after dark.

A warning? Heed these words or are the words a marking of a dare? Either way, these words linger and leave a haunting embrace—a brief shudder passes through me imagining Estelle murmuring these words to Adeline.

“What is a person, if not the marks they leave behind?” —Stop, why is this sentence so lovely!

Yea, only p. 17 and I already have commentary. If this book isn’t in the production discussion for a movie deal already—I will scream and throw a two year old tantrum until someone in Hollywood pens the deal. Judge Stone MUST be cast as Viola Davis—no question. Thus far, everything about this character screams Viola and I am here for it. Very few books elicit this immediate of a response from me. Kudos so far

“They will not respect you, unless you make them.” —utter brilliance in this quote. Sometimes a healthy amount of fear is necessary to control the mobs. In this story, it is indeed necessitous and warranted fully. In reading this book, I found it so easy to comprehend the origin story of those we are quick to call a villain or monster.

Very slow story-telling. While I am intrigued to know what has become of the wife-I’m not in the edge of my seat. I need suspense and this slow pace reminds me of what it must be like to live in Lagos—where life is calm, resolute and people have a reverence for time and not a constant break neck pace as we live in the West.

Earth shattering, riveting…I can see the story in vivid cinematic depiction racing through my head as I tear through the pages. Purchased this book on 12/30/24 and will complete before the week is complete.

LaKetha Walker is reading A Love Song for Ricki Wilde
This book blew my mind-completely, Ms. Williams is astonishing in so many wonderful ways-fellow OAHS Alum, she dazzled my spirit and this tale reminds me of why love is still worth it. Even when you aren’t looking for love…your spirit knows when it senses the music of your heart. Too few people get to experience unabashed love, romance and unfiltered adoration…but I pray that I get what Ricki had even for a moment. ❤

This was horrendous. I really expected some great revelation at the end of the book. The build up was anti-climatic and perhaps the author was tired at the end of the book—but it just came across as non-sensical and lazy. To anyone considering this as a read-reconsider, heavily.

LaKetha Walker is reading Monday's Not Coming
Children go missing every day…this story was eerie though because it immediately grabbed me. D.C. came alive and I felt as though Monday was a child that I would have known quite easily. Recounting this book to friends made them think of Relisha Rudd and her disappearance. I pray that this book awakens a call to arms to parents, caregivers, and neighbors to be ever mindful of our surroundings.

Harlem Shuffle...yikes...I am still in the first section of this book and it's going terribly. Any thoughts on jumping to part two of the book? Does it become more exciting? Currently, I have thoughts of putting it down altogether, but don't want to be seen as a quitter.

Black Girls Must Be Magic--it's already endearing to me. Book 1 (Must Die Exhausted) was charming and just perfection.
