Sorry, but the trope of “I’m not wearing the school uniform” is so fucking annoying. Like I get that she doesn’t have any social skills (except she has a surprising amount of pop culture knowledge) but not being smart enough to figure out what a uniform is… 🙄

Things that I’m loving
- How fully my brain has to engage when a new reference is being, for lack of a better word, referenced
- The conversational tone. Even though this book is in third person we still get references to “those days” and “back then Alice was…” which is the type of language used around friends

I’m also forever struck by the perfect way Kuang has managed to describe the microcult so many high masking, high achieving students fall into with their mentors. It’s so difficult to read BECAUSE its so accurate

Scene with Helen and Alice: This is so so tough to read but such a wonderful depiction of the mental labyrinths we put ourselves through to make the world around us make sense and to force ourselves to believe that, despite all evidence, we can still make it.

I knew I was gonna be a RF Kuang stan but oh my GOD is she good.

I think they lost me right around the 84% mark, I’m not all that fond of trauma miscommunication trope and this one was quite drawn out. I also don’t like the sexual abuse type behavior from the MMC, I get that it was being used as a plot device but to me it was unnecessary

I’m sorry but WTF? Why is this FMC 16? What are we gaining by having her be underage except for all of these potential hookups being completely inappropriate for her?
And why on earth is one of her captors suggesting we have sex with her headmaster 12 minutes after they met?! (And by met I mean he captured her)

I am so glad that other people like this and I wish I was one of those people.

I’m literally always strung along by Deborah Harkness. Like she is pulling me through the darkness and I’m on the edge of my seat
