Sometimes heavy going, but very interesting and extremely detailed description of the destruction war can cause far away from the actual battle fronts. What happens to an already vulnerable county when its resources are drained to the point where it cannot sustain itself and all trade is blockaded, when it's constantly used as marching route for armies, and when all able men are conscripted for war?

This is like a bloodier and grittier, but still delightful Harry Potter for grown ups. Magical!

I love these novels so much. They are better than cake. The straight forward language, the musings on every day things, the setting and the gentle but poignant criticism of society all make for a more comforting blend than red bush tea. The interactions between Mma Ramtoswe, gentle but firm and decisive, and the far more strident and efficient Mma Makutsi are among my favourites in any novels. :)

This is certainly a change in writing style from the two previous novels I read. Since the last Mieville novel I read was "Iron Council" it seems to me he is somewhat obsessed by trains? Also only time I have seen the word "town" used as a verb, which made me snigger. "This is where farmers farm, next to where towns town". There's also a town called "Bollons" which I keep misreading as "Bollocks".

OMG why haven't I read this before? It is amazing, and I've barely scratched the surface.

Finally Kay is starting to bring out the emotional wringer! He really is at his best with dramatic tragedy, and it seems I've finally reached that part where all the carefully structured power balances are starting to crumble and fall apart. Will be interesting to see who ends up still standing when the dust settles. I suppose I can't hope for both Gisel and Styliane?

The vague sense of disappointment continues. At least there are more political machinations which is a good thing, but at the same time the male wish-fulfillment problem is even more prominent than in the last novel and twice as annoying. It's getting to the point where I hope the dome falls on Crispin's head soon.

Hmm, more protagonists. The first 10% done and we haven't even encountered any of the main characters from the first novel. Although to be fair to it, I do like Gisel a lot, and I hope she pulls through.

Still vaguely disappointing. Lots of political murders, lots of intrigue, some fascinating characters and an interesting world and it's alright, just with that vague feeling of disappointment lingering.

My problem with this novel is how highly rated it came. Now I feel sort of mildly let down by it. :/

This is all Natalie's fault, because she likes to recommend me good books. One must note that it exceeds expectations so far. Also, there's a pig in it which is very amusing. One could find that acceptable. :p

Remembered it as a better read than it is this time. Perhaps it's only the beginning that is dodgy.

Well, this IS a different read. So far I really like it, but since my hopes were so high, I am worried it will go south really fast. Let's hope not! *fingers crossed*

Seems GRRM got inspired by Ivanhoe in more ways than the Tourney at Ashby de-la-Zouch.

"What mummery is this, De Bracy?" said Fitzurse, somewhat angrily; "is this a time for Christmas gambols and quaint maskings, when the fate of our master, Prince John, is on the very verge of decision?"

Mummery!! de Bracy also speaks about the seven Saxon kingdoms, which will never again make an appearance.

Unfortunately, it looks like Brian de Bois-Guilbert will still kick the bucket in this read through as well. Curses!
