Why did the author feel the need to write an entire paragraph about a man asking a waiter if his dog could come inside the restaurant??

Chapter Two has just affirmed to me that this author has not concept of imagery. Basic sentence structures coupled with messily written conjunctions, again is making this novel hard to follow.

Chapter One so far has been a hodge podge of a story. One minute you are transported to the gothic imagery of the protagonist playing Chopin and imagining himself waiting for his lover whilst then being forced back into reality with looking through some crusty blue curtains. Very all over the place so far for me.
