Got to the Satanic Panic Chapter. Haven’t read yet except the first line saying “I don’t do Satan” which I have a lot of respect for considering that Dr Perry knows this is usually hysteria and coercion when this is “effecting a town”

How could a 15 year old brutally murder two girls then rape their dead bodies? With no prior abuse and a perfectly normal childhood? In previous chapters this was the reason for a lot of the issues these children were facing such as Virginia and her daughter Laura with failure to thrive as well as the children from Waco. Leon is the most terrifying child I’ve ever heard of, he followed those girls for that purpose.

It’s become apparent after midterms we are skipping around I guess because that was not over just the sections we were told to study. The end of section 5 focuses on family units and how Deaf vs Hearing parents react to the birth of a Deaf Child and navigating the process. For example a Deaf mom calling their unit a Deaf Family and opting out of a cochlear implant for her infant. Abusive? Ethical? Nobody is sure.

Exploring different methods of healing in this part of the book and seeing how they have affected others is very helpful. For a short time I did yoga and felt better, the science backing up the practice is interesting to read. I am also now extremely interested in EMDR therapy to see if it would work for me, but it seems it would be harder to access. Nobody knows what to do with Bipolar however, shot in the dark

Things are really being broken down and explained, I’m left with a sad yet hopeful feeling. It feels nice being confirmed that regular CBT therapy is just not enough treatment for this serious if an illness which is usually a comorbity. With PTSD talking does help, but going to therapy every week to bring up trauma, de influences therapy.

Loving the chapter on Developmental Trauma and how it leads to personality disorders. I think this many be my favorite in the book besides the mention of big pharma.

I have been telling literally everyone that if you’re on Medicaid, no insurance, poor or in foster care they slam you with antipsychotics that ruin your mind and body. It happened to me and I have had it used against me. Why is the U.S government spending more than ever in history on abilify and symbalta when it doesn’t work, destroys motor function and causes extreme weight gain. But only for this population

Everything is seeped in misogyny, it’s more blatant in this culture or more pointed out in the book but it’s in every facet in society. Even in the times the people who are well meaning don’t mean to be so misogynistic, they still are, society bred it into them. Some laws may have changed but the culture hasn’t so at times the law doesn’t matter. There are many similarities with the way Atticus spoke here.

Even with the “fairytale” ending of marriage, justice, new life and friends. Things were not peaceful in Jessica’s mind. Her mother having the audacity to restart the band after she didn’t get her children away from a monster but was to speak out for “advocacy” is major cognitive dissonance. It’s retraumatizing. This far I’m glad Jessica is getting help, if she stays around her family, she will die.

The hoovering that Jessica is being subjected to by her family must be so hard and conflicting, she knows it’s not healthy but they are her family. Her friends are so worried but at this point she has to learn herself. Therapy helping her find words for what is happening Her mother confessing about trying to get everyone out, talking to others, reporting and interviewing. These are the first steps of justice

The cognitive dissonance that Jessica’s mother has in Chapter 13 is truly remarkable, the brainwashing goes so deep but it’s starting to crack. This is clear when her mom is distraught and says that she can’t find the answers to everything that Toby Willis is subjecting his family to. But I don’t feel complete sympathy for her or understand why she’s so shocked that it was repeated with the younger ones.

The irritability due to her major depressive disorder is so evident, it leaps out on the page on you. I’m relating so hard to Esther, having to be perfect but not knowing what you want to be perfect for, unable to connect to anyone, hating your body, not expecting anyone to love you or get married, also Doreen is a complicated character but didn’t deserve that. I wonder if she’s really happy? She’s magnetic

Just reaching chapter 11 you can see how the seeds for abuse, brainwashing, abuse through religion, mind control and basically this family cult that Toby Willis has constructed ever since the birth of his first child has grown and become so extreme. To the point where his wife and children so readily fall in line. He is strategic, getting to this point was calculated and his escalation in future chapters will be too

Just finished the unit on childhood disorders. This was extremely interested and also explained how Covid has played a factor in the increase is the population of children getting diagnosed with a mental disorder and their symptoms being more extreme.

I like how within every page of a diagnosis there is a subjection on how every model of abnormal psychology would treat the particular illness described in a very organized way. The explanation of symptoms, history and experiences of people. The journal entry from the anonymous woman that has bipolar disorder like me brought me to tears, she writes exactly what it’s like on page 203.
