Will Hanlon is on page 81 of 256 of The Plague
Camus has done a brilliant job so far describing the opening hours, days, weeks, and months of an urban plague epidemic. The parallels of how the municipal authorities of Oran dealt with plague to how our own state health agencies handled COVID-19 make this an even more interesting read. I am very excited to continue on with this book!

Camus has done a brilliant job so far exploring the opening hours, days, weeks, and months of an urban plague epidemic. The parallels of how the municipal authorities of Oran and the various health authorities of Canada and elsewhere handled their respective outbreaks, plague and coronavirus, make this an even more interesting read. Super excited to continue on with this book!

So good!!! I loved the first book but this one trumps it with its fantastic characters and amazing worldbuilding. Tyrion’s chapters are my favourite so far (love King’s Landing), however the others are not far behind. Still have quite a bit left but I am ready to go!

Will Hanlon is on page 198 of 288 of The Plantation of Ulster: Ideology and Practice
Amazing collection of essays that explore the plantation of Ulster from a variety of perspectives! Just finished Marc Caball’s contribution on Gaelic Irish praise poets’ response to the intense transformation of Ireland during this period, especially the dislocation of the traditional aristocracy. Very excited for the remaining three chapters!!

Loved loved loved this book! One of my favourite quotes is from the epilogue included in this special edition: “Choice is free but seldom easy — / That’s what human freedom means.”

I have just finished The Torrents of Spring. YIKES. That was a very poor attempt at a novella, although I have read that Hemingway purposefully pumped out an inferior product in ten-days time. The author’s notes to the reader were humorous, however, and provide a tiny window into his experience writing the story.

Will Hanlon is on page 159 of 374 of Bitter Fruit: The Story of the American Coup in Guatemala
“Bitter Fruit,” written like a thriller, details the elaborate plot by United Fruit, the U.S. State Department, and the CIA to overthrow the democratically-elected government of Guatemala in 1954. So far, the most interesting chapter for me was “Advertisements for Myself,” which describes United Fruit’s successful PR and lobbying campaigns to paint Guatemala as a communist threat to the United States.

I haven’t touched this book since reading break (life got too busy!), so I decided to start again from the beginning. This book is fantastic, although it is noticeably different from the first book. Its story almost seems smaller in scale, even though Paul’s dominion stretches out from Arrakis across the known universe. I am so excited to see where it goes from here!

Toole is a master of creating characters that feel alive, rather than just serving as objects of the plot. Every seed he plants early in the book appears to have borne fruit later on, and it has made this book such an incredible read. So excited to finish the last few remaining chapters!

John Kennedy Toole is so good at creating a world and filling it with interesting characters! I haven’t been able to read much lately, but I look forward to learning more about the adventures of Ignatius J. Reilly.

The funniest first chapter of a book that I have ever read! The main character is genuinely one of the worst human beings imaginable and I am here for it.

Dune: Messiah is such a different change of pace from the first book in the series, but I am really enjoying it so far! Lots of plots within plots within plots (okay maybe not so different that way).
