It would be decades before Murphy, in connection with a workers compensation claim filed in connection with injuries he allegedly suffered while playing for the San Jose Sharks, finally received a conclusive diagnosis that the repeated brain trauma he suffered while playing in the NHL had had serious, life-altering consequences. It’s impossible to say whether Murphy understood what was going on within his own brain.
