This went from a cute parody to unbearably horny so fast... yikes

I'm really hooked, and yet wondering if this will be a DNF. Bryson tends to go on long critical tangents, and the overall tone is a lot more negative than I was hoping for. His hiking partner, Stephen Katz, is made out to be a miserable human being that I wouldn't want to spend two second with. However, the perspective of two ordinary guys hitting the AT is fun and this has made me laugh out loud several times.

Got this as an arc to help some of my friends. The author recommends taking the enneagram, DiSC, and Vander Index tests. Turns out the Vander Index is something he invented, and charges TWENTY NINE DOLLARS for. Excuse me??!! Needless to say I will not be paying that when I'm reading and reviewing this as an arc *for* the author/publisher. What a joke!

As someone diagnosed with ADHD I have mixed feelings about the representation in this book. On one hand, it's almost painfully accurate. On the other hand, I'm REALLY hoping Raine comes out of this with some sort of way to cope- be it therapy, meds, or just new skills. She's 28 and got diagnosed 3 years ago but doesn't appear to be doing ANYTHING to manage her symptoms! Girl please take care of yourself!!

I was happy to see sentiment like this shared in Christian literature :
"legacy is often connected with marriage & children. But that is not the only way to have generational impact, nor is it inherently a 'holier' way. ... Our definition of legacy is often too narrow. ... 'If marriage & children was the pinnacle of the human experience, Jesus would have done it.'"

Picked this one out because I've decided to read some theology books and I've been seeking out more psychology/self help as well, so this seemed like a no-brainer. It is getting a little bogged down with metaphors and scripture, but I still appreciate the earnest message and I think I'll benefit from continuing. Tentatively enjoying this.

I cannot stress enough how enjoyable and relatable this book is for me. I have a feeling this one is going to leave a hole that no other book will quite fill.

This is a great read/listen so far. Always love when the audiobook is read by the author. I think a lot of us can relate to the desire to escape the humdrum of our lives and make a little home in the woods. It's inspiring that this guy has zero clue what he's doing, but he's got the drive to figure it out.

Once again disappointed that this author, who works as an EDITOR, neglected to research guns accurately in a WESTERN.

A cowboy-action revolver wouldn't be dropping casings.... That just ain't how revolvers work 💀

PLEASE DON'T OMG 💀 Never ever cross your fingers over the chamber of a revolver unless you wanna blow that finger off. Disappointed to see improper gun safety in a book that otherwise seems carefully detailed for historical accuracy.

Idk about you, but 14 was the worst year of my life. So it's hard to go along with this relentless romanticizing of that age. Maybe 14 year olds aren't depressed in Sweden? Lmao

Wow... Still boring a hundred pages in and I do not like these people 😬 I would DNF this one if I wasn't reading it with someone else
