I would also like to add that I think it would have been wonderful to have a more ‘realistic’ representation of a ‘regular’ slave. It’s making me feel like we have to award black people with extraordinary abilities in order to be able to empathize. When reading the original Twain I was so amazed by Jim’s character without having to make him a genius. A slave that does not know Locke can still have wisdom.

Im honestly a little disappointed by the fact that Jim (James) in this iteration is highly educated. While it is true that it was possible for a slave owned by a wealthy household to teach himself how to read, to me it’s inconceivable that he or any other character in this book would ask themselves if the comment a racist made was a proleptic or dramatic irony.

At first I was very excited to pick up a Vonnegut book I hadn’t read (there’s not a lot of those left), halfway through the book I was very scared because I was not liking it. Now that I have finished I’d like to say I feel troubled. He has given me so many things to think about… the title started to make a lot more sense.

Lest to say he remains my favorite author.

Joan’s writing is simultaneously incredibly composed and harrowing. I don’t want to keep reading this. Which is a testament to my own lack of vulnerability, not a flaw in Didion’s writing.

I find myself feeling both jealousy and relief, such intense grief can only arrive after a partnership filled with love, understanding and admiration.

the only characters that remain likeable are the ones that are underdeveloped (which is most of them) and i feel like kuang over relies on shock value to compensate for the lack of a original storyline
